23 fishermen detained

As many as 23 fishermen hailing from Kanyakumari and Kerala were detained in Diego Garcia, a British Island by its navy on May 11, according to P. Justin Antony, President, Tamil Nadu Fishermen Development Trust (TN-FIDET).

Of these, 21 fishermen were from Kanyakumari and 2 from Trivandrum district in Kerala, a release from Mr. Antony said. He said that the fishermen had ventured into sea for fishing in two boats owned by R. Selvadhason of KR Puram area in Thuthur in Kanyakumari District.

The fishing materials, GPS and wireless instruments have been seized by the navy officials.

The TN-FIDET appealed to the governments to take steps to secure the early release of the fishermen.

The detention of fishermen in Britain Island was confirmed by the Assistant Director of Fisheries, Colachel in Kanyakumari district.
