21 councillors submit resignation to Collector

October 31, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:47 am IST - ARANTHANGI:

Twenty-one councillors of Aranthangi Municipality, including its vice chairman L. Muralidharan (BJP), submitted their resignation letters to Pudukottai Collector S. Ganesh here on Friday in protest against what they termed as ‘neglect of their wards’ by the Municipal Chairperson E. Meenal (DMK). Those resigned included 10 DMK councillors, six AIADMK, two Congress, one DMDK and one Independent. Mr. Muralidharan said that they had no other option but to resign their posts to register their protest.

He said that although the councillors were making pleas seeking various civic amenities, the municipal chairperson has been ignoring them for a long time. They had repeatedly highlighted the problem in the council meetings and staged agitations to highlight the problem over the past couple of years.

The resignation is the culmination of the protests by the councillors, he said.

The municipality accounts for 27 wards and one councillor had resigned already. The DMK has had a majority in the council, but most of the party councillors had turned against the chairperson. The councillors had submitted separate though identical resignation letters to the Collector of Pudukottai.

However, according to the municipality officials, the councillors, as per procedure, have to submit their resignations to the Municipal Chairperson.
