150 students to attend INSPIRE internship

As many as 150 students studying in higher secondary in government schools in the district will attend a five day INSPIRE-internship programme organised by Government Arts College, Tiruvannamalai.

Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, sponsors the event under its INSPIRE (Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research) programme.

R. Ravishankar, Coordinator of INSPIRE-2015 said that only students studying in government schools who had obtained more than 470 marks in SSLC are eligible for the programme.

They will be provided accommodation and food in college hostel.

“Aim of the programme is to expose students to research possibilities in the fields of science and to encourage cream of the students to choose science as their option in higher studies.

The participants will attend lectures by eminent scholars and they will be allowed to use labs of the college in experiment sessions.

Three kinds of scholarships will be provided - Scheme for Early Attraction of Talents (SEATS) for 10-15 age group, Scholarship for Higher Education (SHE) for 17-22 age group, and Assured Opportunity for Research Scholars (AORC) meant for Ph.D. scholars. The students who attend this internship will be in an advantageous position while applying for the AORC scholarship later,” Mr. Ravishankar said.

The theoretical sessions and the lab sessions, kind of exposure they get from the scholars may persuade the students to choose science in higher education, said G.Elango, Assistant Coordinator of the programme.
