Mass sapling planting campaign, administering of pledge marked the World Environment Day celebrations at Salem Steel Plant on Friday.

The celebration was organised on this year’s theme of ‘Seven Billion Dreams, One Planet, Consume with Care’ which aims to accommodate everyone’s dreams without wastage of resources.
Raman, Executive Director, hoisted the Environment Flag in the presence of General Managers N. Tamilarasan (Finance and Accounts), P.K. Mishra, in-charge (Works), A.K. Jaiswal (Maintenance), M. Somasundaram (Project and EDS), R.K. Nagabhushana (Steel and Quality).
Addressing the gathering, Mr. Raman said that though there were seven billion people in the world, we have only one planet and our consumption of its resources must be done with care so that future generations do not suffer.
He outlined the steps taken by SAIL and Salem Steel Plant for conservation of the environment.
Salem Steel Plant does not discharge any effluents into the public domain and is the first plant among SAIL units to be certified to ISO 14001 system for environment management.
Mr. Raman administered a pledge for sustaining and improving the environment with sustainable consumption, minimising use of natural resources, reducing emissions and creating awareness among the people.
A mass sapling planting programme formed part of the event, when 100 saplings comprising 41 Portia, 50 Pongamia and 9 neem trees were planted by the officers and the employees in the township of the plant.
