Surjeet Singh, elderly Indian prisoner who has been languishing in a Pakistani prison after completion of life sentence, will be released on Thursday. He is expected to cross over from Wagah the same day.
Surjeet Singh’s lawyer Awais Sheikh said he would, in all likelihood, be brought to Wagah in the morning by the jail authorities and handed over to Indian High Commission officials for the paperwork.
Earlier in the day, Senior Adviser on Interior Rehman Malik said Surjeet Singh would be released in the next 48 hours. He also clarified that no summary had been sent to the President for the release of death row inmate Sarabjit Singh, as was reported across the media on Tuesday evening.
The foot-crossing point at Wagah will be particularly busy on Thursday, as 311 fishermen, released from Karachi’s Malir Jail on Wednesday, are also due to cross over to India.
