The Bharatiya Janata Party MLA from Thana Bhavan, Suresh Rana, was on Thursday booked under the National Security Act (NSA).
Rana was arrested on September 20 for his alleged role in fanning communal tension in Muzaffarnagar and is lodged in Banda jail. He is the second BJP MLA, after Sangeet Singh Som, to be booked under the NSA. Som, the MLA from Sardhana in Meerut is incarcerated in Orai jail.
IG (Law and Order ) R.K. Vishwakarma told reporters that proceedings under the NSA had been initiated against 18 persons.
BJP State unit president Laxmikant Bajpai slammed the State government for charging Rana under the NSA. Mr. Bajpai, who met Rana and Som in Banda and Orai jails on Thursday, accused the government of pursuing appeasement politics. He wanted to know why no action was taken against the Bahujan Samaj Party MP from Muzaffarnagar, Qadir Rana and Congress leader Saeeduzaman, against whom non-bailable warrants had earlier been issued by a Muzaffarnagar court in connection with the violence.
