Sepoy Shanker Singh of 20 Jat was killed and four other soldiers and a Major were injured in two blasts in different areas near the Line of Control in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday.

Informed sources said an improvised explosive device went off at Tarkundi Galli in Mendhar area on Thursday morning when an Army patrol was moving towards a forward post.

The IED, planted in all probability by militants or “enemy soldiers” from across the LoC the previous night, exploded on the track between two Army posts when the men of 20 Jat and 6 Rajput units were exchanging positions.

A defence spokesman in Jammu said Sepoy Shanker Singh’s three colleagues of 20 Jat were injured.

Another IED exploded in Bhimber Galli of Poonch in the evening. A Major and two soldiers sustained injuries.

The blasts are believed to have been triggered by remote-control devices.
