Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi during his visit to the West Bengal on Saturday will try to reach out to both the working class and the middle class by meeting workers of a Jute mill in State’s Hooghly district and interacting with prospective home buyers in Kolkata.
The State Congress leadership is also pinning high hopes on Mr. Gandhi's visit as he will address party workers at another event in the city. The visit comes a year after he campaigned for her party during the 2014 Lok Sabha polls and assumes significance in view of the State’s Assembly polls scheduled in 2016.
“We have high hopes about Mr. Gandhi’s visit. We feel that his presence will boost the morale of party workers in the State,” State Congress president Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury told The Hindu on Friday.
The schedule of Mr. Gandhi has been carefully crafted to reap maximum benefits. During the visit Mr. Gandhi will try to gain confidence of workers of jute industry which employs lakhs in south Bengal. The industry is in crisis as lockouts and closures of Jute mills have become more common over the past few months. By meeting prospective home buyers in Kolkata the Congress leader will take on the Centre over the proposed Real Estate Regulatory Authority Bill.
