Tributes poured in for Indira Gandhi on her 33rd death anniversary on Tuesday, October 31. Ms. Gandhi was shot dead by her two bodyguards this day in 1984.

Ms. Gandhi's assassination came months after she ordered the storming of the Amritsar Golden Temple to counter the Punjab insurgency. The nature of her death, according to Sagarika Ghose who recently authored Ms. Gandhi's biography , made her a legend. “There is a lasting mystique and when you just mention her name there seems to be a frisson in the air, a nostalgia that cuts across generations even,” Ms. Ghose said in an interview to The Hindu .

In a second biography that was released this year , former Environmental Minister Jairam Ramesh spoke about Ms. Gandhi's legacy as an environmentalist. It was clear to me when I became Environment Minister that the entire legacy of environmental governance in India today is owed to her,” said Mr. Ramesh .
