A Delhi court on Saturday gave protection from arrest to Karti Chidambaram, son of former Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram, in two Aircel-Maxis cases related to the 2G issue.

Special Judge O.P. Saini granted him the protection.

The cases are being investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

Mr. Saini provided the relief on applications moved by Mr. Karti, who sought anticipatory bail in both cases.

His counsel submitted that there was apprehension that both probe agencies might arrest him without any reason in view of his “arbitrary arrest in the INX Media case” by the CBI recently. They further submitted that both probe agencies had summoned him though there was no material against the applicant.

Opposing the anticipatory bail applications, counsel for the ED and the CBI submitted that, as of now, there was no reason for the applicant to apprehend his arrest in the two cases.

The Delhi High Court had on Friday granted bail to Mr. Karti in the INX Media case.
