A young woman was shot dead by a man at Jeypore in Koraput district on Monday for turning down his marriage proposal.

According to police sources, B. Pinky (21) was shot dead by Ajit Khora on the terrace of her house around 6 p.m.

The accused was caught by relatives and neighbours and ruthlessly beaten up before being handed over to the police. The revolver used in the crime was also handed over to the police.

Sub-Divisional Police Officer of Jeypore Rajendra Senapati said as per initial investigation the accused happened to be the son of an uncle of the deceased. It is alleged that he had been trying to woo Pinky for a long time, but she resisted his advances. It is not clear from where Ajit procured the arm and ammunition.
