The people of Manipur observed a day's fast on Saturday and staged a sit-in on completion of 11 years of fast by Irom Sharmila, who has been demanding the repeal of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958. Groups of people in mourning dress sat under improvised pandals and displayed placards pledging support to her.

The Manipur unit of the BJP and the Manipur People's Party also observed the day in their party offices here. Students, including those from the Government Blind School of Takyelpat, abstained from classes.
