Inquest proceedings in and an independent magisterial probe into the custodial death of undertrial Sarfu Ram of the Khour belt of Akhnoor tehsil have started, the police said on Sunday. He was found hanging at the Joint Interrogation Centre of the CID wing of police at the Miran Sahib on August 17. The police said they were awaiting the post-mortem report.

‘Cause of death'

“Inquest proceeding under Section 174 of the Criminal Procedure Code has been initiated at the Miran Sahib police station to ascertain the cause of death,” the police said.

Murder, say kin

However, the victim's family has alleged that Sarfu Ram was brutally murdered as he had disclosed the names of some police officers linked to him. However, the police say Sarfu Ram was a notorious trans-border smuggler.
