The BJP on Thursday formally announced its alliance with the Indigenous Peoples Front of Tripura (IPFT) for the Assembly elections in Tripura to be held on February 18.

Ruling out the possibility of an alliance with any other regional party, Northeast Democratic Alliance (NEDA) chairman Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “We have struck a seat sharing deal with the IPFT, which will contest in nine seats. The BJP will contest in rest (of the) 51 seats.”

He also released a list of nine seats that IPFT will contest.

When asked about IPFT’s contentious demand of carving out a state of Tipraland out of Tripura’s tribal areas, he said the BJP would address only socio-economic, cultural and linguistic issues of tribals in the State.

“BJP and IPFT would issue a joint statement on January 28 which will explain for itself. We forcefully stand for a united Tripura,” he asserted.
