The ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and the Congress bagged a seat each in the by-election to the two Assembly seats held on August 22.

While Jeet Mohinder Sidhu (SAD) bagged the Talwandi Sabo seat, Preneet Kaur (Congress) won from Patiala (Urban). The Aam Admi Party (AAP) came a poor third in both.

Both the Assembly seats fall in the Patiala Lok Sabha segment and Dharamvir Gandhi of the AAP is the sitting MP.

Mr. Sidhu who quit Congress to join the Akalis before the Lok Sabha elections earlier this year won with a convincing margin of 46,642 votes while Ms Kaur, wife of Capt. Amarinder Singh won with a margin of 23,282 votes.

The AAP fared badly with its Patiala candidate, Harjit Singh Adaltiwala losing his deposit. In the Lok Sabha elections, Preneet Kaur, a three-time MP, lost to Mr Gandhi.

The AAP which faltered while giving tickets in these high stake by-election, firmed up its campaign, but the euphoria within the party after it won four Lok sabha seats dissipated due to the poor performance of its candidates.
