On a mission to revive Congress in West Bengal ahead of next year’s Assembly elections, senior party leader Rahul Gandhi today said it could be done by rejuvenating the Youth Congress.
“It is imperative that Congress needs to be strengthened in West Bengal by rejuvenating Youth Congress the way it has been done in Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu,” Mr. Gandhi told YC workers in a closed-door meeting with them.
Quoting Mr. Gandhi, Birbhum district Congress president Asit Mal told reporters that the AICC general secretary exhorted Congress workers to step up the membership drive for the YC to strengthen the party and promised guiding young Congressmen.
Mr. Gandhi asked YC and elected Congress representatives to work for the party and serve the organisation sincerely.
Media persons were not allowed to enter the venue of Mr. Gandhi’s meeting.
In Santiniketan also, where Mr. Gandhi visited Visva-Bharati, journalists had a trying time in covering the programme. They were told by the university authorities that the Special Protection Group in charge of Mr. Gandhi’s security had refused entry to them.
Only towards the end of the programme a few photographers from the print and electronic media were allowed inside for five minutes, but reporters were kept out.
The media were also not allowed during Mr. Gandhi’s interaction with local Youth Congress leaders at the Gitanjali complex at Santiniketan.
