Police on Tuesday said 11 BJP members, including district president Dinesh Vashisht, have been booked for staging a protest against the Uttar Pradesh government for the Mathura clashes.

Mr. Vashisht and the 10 others held a protest here on Sunday, raising slogans against the government and burning an effigy of PWD Minister Shivpal Singh Yadav, Sub-Inspector Manoj Kumar said.

Police said an FIR was registered against them under Sections 147 (Punishment for rioting) and 153 B (Imputations, assertions prejudicial to national integration) of the IPC.

The government had rejected the BJP’s charge that there was political pressure on the police to not evict the encroachers, who moved into the 280-acre park in 2014.
