Ten people were killed in landslides triggered by torrential rains in Assam, while Odisha reported one more sunstroke death, taking the toll to 19. Sonepur was the hottest place in the State at 41.4 degrees Celsius.
Continuous heavy rains in Assam for the last three days triggered landslides that claimed 10 lives in Karimganj and Hailakandi districts in Barak Valley. NDRF and police are undertaking rescue and relief operations.
Those dead in the landslide in Karimganj were identified as Nitai Das (38), Supriya Das (32), Nibas Das (10), Mitali Das (13) and Kunal Das (6), Superintendent of Police Pradip Kumar Kar said.
Due to heavy rains at Karimganj, the electronic voting machines (EVMs) of Ratabari and Karimganj North Assembly constituencies have been shifted by the district administration to a safe place, Deputy Commissioner Manoj Deka said.
The shift of the EVMs was conducted in the presence of all political party leaders, observers, district and deputy commissioner and superintendent of police, Mr. Deka said.
Flood in Arunachal
Flood waters of the overflowing Noa-Dehing river, fed by torrential rain in the past few days, have inundated several areas in Namsai district of Arunachal Pradesh.
The flood water inundated Mahadevpur-I, Mahadevpur-IV and Kakoni villages besides submerging paddy fields in Namsai district, an official report said on Wednesday. Besides, five bamboo spurs out of 14 constructed on May 10 were washed away by floodwaters at New Silatoo threatening the Mahadevpur town.
Water Resources Development (WRD) officials are constantly monitoring the situation.
The embankment and spur at Nampong in Piyong circle are also badly affected by the flood water of the river, the report said.
Lightning kills two in Tripura
Two people were killed and six others critically injured when lightning struck them in Tripura, the police said.
Basana Debbarma, 42, and Bipul Debbarma, 38, were killed at Champahour in western Tripura. A police official said the victims were in a paddy field when the lightning hit them. Rain accompanied by high velocity winds and lightning lashed Tripura on Wednesday, damaging crops and uprooting electric poles and trees.
Odisha likely to have rain
Odisha is likely to experience rain and thundershower under the impact of a deep depression that centred over west-central and adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal, about 780 km south-southwest of Gopalpur.
The IMD said in its first cyclone alert that rain and thundershower would occur at a few places over south Odisha and at one or two places over north Odisha during the next 24 hours.
“The system is likely to continue to move north-northeastwards along and off Andhra Pradesh Coast and further intensify into a cyclonic storm during next 24 hours,” the IMD alert said adding that it (system) is likely to move northeastwards along and off north Andhra Pradesh and Odisha Coasts during subsequent 48 hours.
While the storm warning signals of Distant Cautionary Signal Number one (DC-I) was hoisted at Paradip and Gopalpur ports in Odisha, the IMD predicted that gusty surface wind speed from southerly direction in south Odisha Coast and southwesterly direction in north Odisha coast reaching 45 to 50 kmph with gusting to 55 kmph would prevail along and off Odisha coast.
“Fishermen are advised not to venture into sea in Odisha coast in view of the deep depression in the Bay of Bengal,” it said. - PTI & IANS
