Govt. strategy for Land Bill unclear

Faced with united opposition to the Land Acquisition Bill, the government is grappling to finalise a strategy to get the controversial legislation passed.

A section of the BJP MPs wants the Bill to be referred to a Joint Parliamentary Committee while others want it to be brought for approval in the Lok Sabha where the government has the majority.

If the Bill fails to muster support in the Upper House for lack of numbers, then the government will seek to get it passed in a joint session of Parliament. “We may bring it to the Lok Sabha next week or send it to a committee,’’ a senior Minister told The Hindu .
