In a shocking incident, a cow vigilante group in Ujjain district thrashed a young man for nearly half-an-hour, alleging that he had cut a cow’s tail, ignoring warnings not to kill cows.
After the video showing the group beating the man with belts went viral on social media, the local police arrested three miscreants.
In the video, the youth is seen being slapped, punched, kicked and beaten with belts, while the group shouts how he could kill and cut cows, asks his name and chants “gai hamari mata hai”.
The incident that took place near the Peeplinaka Temple on Saturday afternoon was recorded by a by-stander who put the clip on social media.
Three of the accused have been arrested, said Jiwajiganj Police Station in-charge O. P. Mishra.
“We have made some arrests in the incident. This is just the beginning of our investigation,” said Mr. Mishra over telephone.
However, the incident purportedly a case of cow protection has turned out to be entirely different, say the police. The accused reportedly had a dispute with the victim over money, he added. The police have registered a case based on the complaint of the victim, identified as Apuda Malviya. They have also identified the accused as Chetan Sankhla, Vikas alias Bhura, Nilesh Sankhla and Shubham.
