West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee met Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday evening to register her protest over the exclusion of 40 lakh people from the NRC.

“I asked him to amend the NRC Bill or bring a new Bill. I also spoke to him about reports of the NRC being implemented in Bengal, I told him that if such a thing happens there can be a civil war,” she told presspersons.

Mr. Singh tweeted that he had told Ms. Banerjee that no one would be harassed.

The Trinamool Congress will send an eight-member delegation to Assam to monitor the process of NRC update. “On August 2 and 3, a delegation comprising six MPs from Trinamool [Sukhendu Sekhar Ray, Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, Ratna De Nag, Nadimul Haque, Arpita Ghosh, Mamata Thakur] and State Minister Firhad Hakim will be visiting Assam,” a party statement said. Mahua Moitra, MLA, is also a member, a statement said.
