Six people, including two children, are feared drowned after a boat carrying seven overturned on Tuesday evening in Maharashtra’s Ujani Dam waters.

“Our Pune team has been deployed and conducting search operations in the waters since morning. So far, six people are missing,” according to the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).

According to local police other than NDRF, Maharashtra’s disaster response unit along with local police and administration are involved in the rescue efforts.

The mishap is believed to have occurred due to strong winds hitting this part of the State on Tuesday evening. Boat service sails between Kalashi and Bhugaon villages.

A seventh passenger onboard, an Assistant Police Inspector managed to swim to safety.

“At Taluka Indapur’s Kalashi, a boat overturned in the catchment area. I visited and inspected the rescue and relief operations underway. A team of NDRF is involved with the operation. Search for the missing is going on and we pray that they are all safe,” said Supriya Sule, Baramati Member of Parliament.
