With 15 schools vying for the top spot, it was no easy feat for Srijeeth Basu and Kishaloy Chakraborty, both Standard IX students of Don Bosco, Kolkata, to emerge winners in the 14th edition of The Hindu Young World Q uiz.
After breezing through 15 cities, where more than 2,800 teams participated in the regional rounds, 15 teams made it to the finals held here on Thursday. After two rounds of eliminations, six finalists battled it out to emerge champions.
The teams that made it to the finals were: Rajagiri PS from Kochi, Bhavan’s Rajaji Vidyashram from Chennai, Hyderabad Public School, Hyderabad (took part in Mumbai), Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan from Kozhikode, Don Bosco from Kolkata and Little Rock from Mangalore.
With quizmaster V.V Ramanan’s favourite grid format having been brought back again, students answered questions ranging from history, geography, current affairs to entertainment. The 24-square grid had a hidden picture beneath it that when guessed right gave the teams bonus points. Wading through buzzers, negative points and passed-on questions, the last question to find out the scientist who discovered 10 elements and had one named after him, Don Bosco emerged winner with its answer Glenn Seaborg.
Former India cricketer Javagal Srinath was the chief guest, who gave away the prizes. Walking away with trophies, certificates and a cash award of Rs. 25,000 from The Hindu , Britannica CDs, Sony earphones from Smart, Wildcraft backpacks, and gift hampers from Success Notebooks was the team from Don Bosco, Kolkata, which emerged winner with a score of 114.
Soham Bhadra (VIII), Parth Oberoi (IX) from Bhavan’s Rajaji Vidyashram and Aditya B Naik ( IX), Karhik Rao (1X) from Little Rock, Mangalore, came second and third, winning trophies and cash awards of Rs. 15,000 and Rs. 10,000 from The Hindu . They also won Britannica CDs, Sony earphones from Smart, Wildcraft backpacks, and gift hampers from Success Notebooks.
Teams from Rajagiri PS, Kochi, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Kozhikode, and Hyderabad Public School won the fourth, fifth and sixth places. They also won Rs. 5,000 each from The Hindu. Britannia Milk Bikis Future Minds, in association with The Hindu Young World Quiz, conducted the online quiz for the second year in a row. This year saw a sweeping 42,000 entries over a period of one month. The winner of Category I (IV, V, VI) was Mukesh Kumar, VI, Senthil Public School, Salem, who won an Apple iPad. The runners up Sree Rekha, IV, Sri Siddhartha Public School, Vissannapeta, and Rishika, V, Holy Angels ISC, Thiruvananthapuram, won a HCL tablet each. In category II (VII, VII, IX) Kamesh Kannan, IX, BMD Jain School, Vellore, won an Apple iPad. Ashwin IX, Jawahar Higher Secondary School, Neyveli, and Akash Sharma IX, Sadiq Nagar, New Delhi, won HCL Tablets each. All the gifts were sponsored by Britannia Milk Bikis.
