Wayanad farmer commits suicide

May 11, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:44 am IST - KALPETTA:

A 62-year-old marginal farmer was found hanging in a coffee plantation near his house at Chathamangalamkunnu, near Irulam, in the district on Saturday.

The Pulpally police identified the deceased as Poonattil Raveendran. Raveendran had borrowed a huge amount from his friends for cultivation but could not repay it on time due to crop loss, his relatives said.

The Irulam branch of the Grameen Bank had served a revenue recovery notice on him to pay a debt of Rs.70,000 in seven days, a relative said.

It was suspected that the huge debt tempted him to take the extreme step. Raveendran is survived by his wife and four daughters.
