The Communist Party of India (Marxist) district conference being held at Irinjalakuda, near here, on Friday reportedly witnessed harsh criticism against Leader of Opposition V.S. Achuthanandan and Polit Bureau member M.A. Baby.

CPI(M) State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan inaugurated the conference here on Thursday.

Representatives from Nattika reportedly criticised Mr. Achuthanandan for his stand in a case related to vandalisation of the P. Krishna Pillai Memorial at Kannarkkad in Alappuzha district.

A few delegates alleged that Mr. Baby’s remarks after his defeat in the Kollam parliamentary seat had put the party on the defensive.

Some delegates alleged that the party and the party organ sided with Babu M. Palissery, MLA, in the infighting in Kunnamkulam.

There was reported criticism that party members in Irinjalakuda were losing touch with the people.

A few delegates alleged that some CPI(M) workers maintained close ties with Kerala Congress leaders and the ‘land mafia’.

They also alleged that the CPI(M) had soft-pedalled on its campaign against Finance Minister K.M. Mani who was facing corruption charges.

Inaugurating a seminar on ‘Indian economy: Nehru to Modi’, CPI(M) leader Elamaram Kareem said socialist powers, including the Soviet Union, had contributed largely to the development of independent India.

The conference will conclude on Saturday.
