Vegetable farming to be promoted

June 28, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:40 am IST - KASARAGOD:

The Neeleswaram municipality is embarking on an ambitious project to achieve self-sufficiency in vegetable cultivation by giving thrust to organic farming.

The ‘jaiva nagaram paddhathi’ envisaging vegetable farming on 10.50 acre of barren land will be inaugurated by District Collector P.S. Muhammed Sagir on Tuesday on the banks of the Neeleswaram river.

Mr. Sagir will also flag-off a ‘Jaiva Yatra’ (journey to promote organic farming) from the Neeleswaram market junction.

Thirty-two municipal council members, led by chairperson V. Gauri, will take part in the initiative, for which the authorities have earmarked Rs.5 lakh in the first phase. Officials with the support of Kudumbashree units had identified barren land near the Taluk Hospital, excise office, and the stadium premises in the town to take up the project.
