An urban primary health centre (PHC) with post-noon outpatient facility will soon start functioning in Punalur.

The centre is expected to meet the health-care needs of people residing in the hilly areas of the district. The facility is being built on the ground floor of the Kalayanadu Public Library and according to officials, the 1,500 sq ft centre will be operational shortly.

The Punalur municipality has spent ₹15 lakh for setting up the basic infrastructure while the National Rural Health Mission will be providing the equipment and staff.

15 staff

Every day OP will start at 2 p.m. and the service of 15 staff members, including two doctors, will be available. This timing has been fixed considering the convenience of plantation workers living in the rural parts. The municipal Corporation is also planning to start mobile health-care units that will reach the most interior areas.

The centre was being set up as part of the State government’s 100-day action plan, said Vasantha Ranjan, chairperson of the Health standing committee.
