Uphold renaissancevalues: Vellappally

Yogam members told to exercise their power of discretion

Those who refuse to join hands for the ‘wall of womenl’ to uphold the renaissance values of Kerala society will be categorised as fools in the annals of history, SNDP Yogam general secretary Vellappally Natesan has said.

Inaugurating the 90th anniversary of the Yogam’s Vennala branch here on Saturday, Mr. Natesan said the Yogam was in the vanguard of renaissance well before the Congress and Communist parties undertook reformative activities in Kerala.

“Renaissance values took a back seat amidst intense political battles. Now, the government has come forward with a new idea. I am being hounded on social media for expressing my solidarity with it. But that does not rattle me and I stand by every word I have spoken on this,” he said.

Mr. Natesan said that he had expressed his disappointment over the Sabarimala verdict of the Supreme Court. “But political parties welcomed it, only to change their stance later. Some of them tried to market faith. It will be good to see where the people who have tried to use ‘namajapa’ for votes have reached.”

He said he did not have any political ambitions; he did not want to be chairman of something, either.

Burning him in effigy would not turn his ideas into ashes. Urging the Yogam members to exercise their power of discretion, Mr. Natesan said the women’s wall should be viewed by Yogam members as an opportunity to think about their ancestors. The Left, he said, had realised the strength of the community, which was why he was made chairman of the organising committee of the wall.
