Leader of the Opposition Ramesh Chennithala has demanded the resignation of Minority Affairs Minister K.T. Jaleel on charges of corruption and nepotism in the appointment of a relative to a key post in the Minority Finance Development Corporation.

Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, Mr. Chennithala said he had written to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan seeking Dr. Jaleel’s ouster as his action amounted to corruption and nepotism under Section 13(B) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.

He said the same conditions that led to the resignation of E.P. Jayarajan as Industry Minister a year ago prevailed in the case of Dr. Jaleel. The Cabinet, in the aftermath of the Jayarajan case, had on October 13, 2016, introduced certain norms for selection of candidates to the posts of Managing Director, CEO, and general manager.

These norms were given the go by in the appointment of Dr. Jaleel’s relative.
