The traders of Chungathara in the district are leading the way in creating a clean and garbage-free village.
Aiming at total cleanliness, the traders, under the banner of the Kerala Vyapari Vyavasayi Ekopana Samiti (KVVES), secured the assistance of the Chungathara grama panchayat, the Total Sanitation and Health Mission (TSHM), the Mar Thoma College, and the National Service Scheme (NSS) unit of Mar Thoma Higher Secondary School in its effort to devise a cleanliness project titled ‘clean village, beautiful village.'
Magician R.K. Malayath will launch the project at a function at Chungathara on Thursday.
The cleanliness drive will focus on all empty pockets and bazaars in the grama panchayat. Particular attention will be given to ward 17.

Mission coordinator Hyder Ali, KVVES president Abdul Hakeem, and secretary James Varghese will lead the programme.
Questionnaires prepared jointly by the TSHM, the grama panchayat, the Kerala Sasthra Sahithya Parishad, and the health inspectors of the State Health Department, will be issued to all households and business establishments in the panchayat.
The National Service Scheme volunteers of the Mar Thoma College and Mar Thoma Higher Secondary School, Chungathara had been trained in conducting the survey.
The data gathered will be analysed using statistical tools and the project will be functional in a month, Chungathara panchayat officials said.
Information will be collected on degradable and non-biodegradable waste at the household level, the fuel used, the use of plastic bags, quantity of electronic waste generated, and water use. The TSHM will offer subsidy biogas plants for those interested, sources said.
