Steps to end traffic chaos at Chinnakada

PWD wing told to submit report

June 18, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:38 am IST - KOLLAM:

City Police Commissioner P. Prakash has said that steps are being taken to soon find a solution to traffic jams in Chinnakada area following the opening of the newly constructed underpass and realigned overbridge there.

“The roads engineering wing of the Public Works Department (PWD) has been asked to submit a detailed report on the issue.”

Mr. Prakash said this while addressing a seminar on ‘Chinnakada gridlock’ organised by the Kollam Press Club on Wednesday in connection with a meeting to commemorate the 18th death anniversary of journalist P.K. Thampi.

He said the report was expected to be submitted in a week. Detailed discussions would be held on it with all stakeholders. A special committee, which included National Transportation Planning and Research Centre (Natpac) representatives, had been constituted for the purpose, he said.

Pedestrians

Mr. Prakash said that pedestrians were given top priority in other countries but they were completely ignored in the case of Chinnakada. “The fact is that people are unable to cross the roads at Chinnakada,” he said.

No alterations could now be brought to the underpass and the overbridge structure. The solution was practical alterations to road engineering in the area, he said.

Apart from launching campaigns, sign boards would be placed at all places, especially for the benefit of motorists entering the city from other places. A decision had been taken to keep such boards free from sponsorships.

Mr. Prakash said the police would be taking strong action against those parking vehicles along no-parking zones.
