The body of Rajkumar, who died allegedly due to custodial torture at the Nedumkandam police station, being brought to Kanjirappally for re-postmortem on Monday.

A re-postmortem of the custodial torture victim Rajkumar at the Kanjirappally General Hospital here on Monday unearthed more injuries on the body than recorded earlier.

K. Narayana Kurup, who heads the judicial commission probing the case, told the media that more injuries were found on the stomach and thighs than reported during the earlier autopsy.

“Besides the re-postmortem, samples, including hair tissues, have been sent for chemical, pathology, and DNA test as part of a comprehensive analysis. Further action will be based after verifying a detailed report to be submitted by the medical team,” he said.

He said the first postmortem examination stated that Rajkumar sustained injuries to his ribs while CPR was administered at the time of his death at the Peerumade Taluk Hospital.

The commission, however, is looking whether this injury resulted from police atrocity at the Nedumkandam station or due to manhandling inside the Peerumade sub-jail.

The re-postmortem was held after the judicial commission cited lapses in the first postmortem held at the Medical College Hospital, Kottayam.

Earlier in the day, the 37-day-old body was exhumed from the cemetery of St. Sebastian’s Church, Wagamon, in the presence of the commission and First Class Judicial Magistrate of Peerumade.

The postmortem procedures were undertaken by a team of police surgeons in the presence of Mr. Kurup. On completion of the process, the body was returned to the burial site by 7.30 p.m.
