Rain situation eases in Wayanad

Roads being restored, shutters of Banasura Sagar, Karapuzha dams lowered

Providing a silver line of hope to the public, the intensity of rain considerably declined in Wayanad district on Friday.

Shutters of the Banasura Sagar dam and the Karapuzha dam were lowered in the evening after the inflow of water decreased from the catchment area, dam safety officials said.

The shutters of the Banasura Sagar dam were lowered to 195 cm from 235 cm and those of Karapuzha, to 55 cm from 90 cm. Now, 166 cumecs and 34 cumecs of water is being discharged from Banasura Sagar and Karapuzha dams respectively to the Kabani river, dam safety officials said.

The district received an average of 3203.59 mm rainfall since May 28, including 88.53 mm on the Friday.

At present, 219 camps are functioning in the district for 7,596 families. As many as 27,167 persons have been shifted to camps.

According to reports, water level in the rivers in Sulthan Bathery and Vythiri taluks declined a little but many a river in the Mananthavadi taluk was in spate.

Traffic through all ghat roads to Wayanad, except Periya and Boys Town ghat section of roads on the Mananthavadi-Kannur State Highway, partially restored on the day.

The road connectivity on the ghat section of the roads, including the Wayanad ghat section on Kozhikode Kollegal National Highway 766; Kuttiyady ghat on the Mananthavadi-Kuttiyady State Highway; Nadukani ghat section on the Malappuram-Sulthan Bathery highway; and Sulthan Bathery-Ooty interstate highway are partially restored, district disaster control room sources said.

Restoration work is under way on the Periya ghat section of the road on the Mananthavadi-Kannur State highway. There was a traffic disruption on NH-766 at Ponkuzhi, 20 km from Sulthan Bathery/100 km from Mysuru, because of inundation on road. But now it is fit for traffic, sources added.
