Rain accompanied by heavy winds for the past couple of days has caused severe damage in the district. As per official estimate, 189 houses were partially damaged and standing crops in 2,228 hectares of land destroyed. An official of the District Disaster Management Cell on Tuesday said four houses were fully damaged.
Severe damage was reported in Devikulam and Thodupuzha taluks. The loss to standing crops was estimated at Rs. 2.28 crore and damage to houses at Rs. 26.62 lakh.
As many as four people lost their lives in monsoon-related incidents. The deaths were reported in cardamom plantations where uprooted trees fell on the workers.
The district administration has alerted that there are chances of over 7 cm rainfall accompanied by wind in some areas till June 27. The police warned of chances of landslips and road blocks in the High Ranges.
The shutters of the Kallarkutty and Lower Periyar dams were opened. The Headworks Dam in Munnar has been overflowing. Power outage was being experienced in the High Ranges and many power lines were cut off after uprooted trees fell on them.
