The Palloor police station at Mahe in Puducherry witnessed tension on Sunday as people, including Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers, gathered outside the station in protest against the custody of a youth reportedly on his wedding day for interrogation in connection with the murder of Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] worker Kannippoyil Babu at Palloor
According to reports, the youth, a native of Palloor, was taken into custody for questioning on the day of his wedding.
In protest, local people, including BJP workers, gathered outside the station. The protest was peaceful, according to reports.
The Puducherry police in Mahe remained tight-lipped about the ongoing investigation into the murder of Babu at Palloor on May 7.
Subordinate police officers were instructed not to speak to the media about the ongoing investigation. When contacted, a senior police officer in Mahe said that no arrest was made in connection with the murder.
“We have taken some people for interrogation and we have released most of them after questioning them for one or two hours,” said the officer who requested anonymity. He also informed that one or two people were still being questioned at the Palloor police station.
Denying that there was a protest outside the station, he said there was a gathering of people outside the station.
RSS worker’s murder
The police investigating into the murder of RSS worker U.C. Shamej, an autorikshaw driver, soon after the killing of Babu, said that some of the assailants could be arrested in a couple of days. When contacted, Thalassery circle inspector K.E. Premachandran, who is investigating the Shamej murder, said the investigation was now in the process of identifying the real accused.
