Protest against move to shift KVASU projects

Sreyamskumar asked to clear his stance

January 17, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:53 am IST - KALPETTA:

The Left Democratic Front (LDF) district committee will launch a series of agitations in protest against the move of the Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (KVASU) to shift infrastructure projects from its headquarters at Pookode to other campuses. LDF district committee convener K.V. Mohanan said in a release here on Friday that the KVASU authorities had stated this formally.

M.V. Sreyamskumar, MLA, who was on the board of management of the university, should state his stance. The construction activities were launched on an ecologically sensitive area. The university could use modern technology to minimise ecological impact, he said.

The move was intended to satisfy a vested-interest group. The State government was yet to intervene in the issue, Mr. Mohanan said.

The LDF would stage a dharna at the university at Pookode on Saturday.

The Students Federation of India (SFI) district unit would also launch agitations.

“The decision of the university to relocate infrastructure projects from Wayanad was part of a conspiracy,” K Rafeeque, central committee member, SFI, said. The organisation would take out protest marches in various centres in the district on January 20, he added.
