Power and water supply in the flood-hit districts have taken a massive hit even as repairs are being carried out on a war footing wherever possible.

Nearly 200 of the 1,081 water supply schemes operated by the Kerala Water Authority (KWA) have been disrupted.

Flooded pump houses

KWA officials blamed flooded pump houses and power failures for majority of the disruptions. Many of the schemes could resume operations once electric supply is restored, they said on Saturday.

The power sector has reported massive losses in the floods. In all, 43.54 lakh Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) consumers have been affected by the blackouts reported in many regions.

High-tension lines snapped in 1,706 locations and low-tension lines, in 42,264 locations. As many as 720 distribution transformers, 1,865 high-tension poles, 10,163 low-tension poles have been damaged.

Restoration cost

A preliminary estimation by the KSEB pegged the cost of restoring the network to its previous state at ₹133.47 crore.

With the power sector hit, daily consumption nosedived to 41.42 million units (August 9). The average daily power consumption in the State normally hovers around the 60-62 million unit mark.
