'Ponnonam' to mark festival in Kannur

‘Ponnonam 2011,' cultural programme being organised by the District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) in connection with the Onam celebrations, will get under way here on Thursday.

At a press conference here on Tuesday, District Collector Anand Singh said Rural Development Minister K.C. Joseph would inaugurate the celebrations at Town Square here at 5.30 a.m.

K. Sudhakaran, MP, and Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, K.K. Narayanan, Sunny Joseph, and James Mathew, MLAs, would speak.

The inaugural function would be followed by a musical programme.

On Friday, an array of programmes, including a short drama by the Excise Department, a Bharatanatyam performance by V.R. Parvathi Raj, and a show by young dancers, would be held.

‘Ponnonam' would come to an end on Saturday. Minister of State for Power K.C. Venugopal would inaugurate the valedictory function.

P. Karunakaran, MP, would be the chief guest. MLAs T.V. Rajesh, E.P. Jayarajan, K.M. Shaji, and C. Krishnan would be present.

Winners of the ‘Pookkalam' contest would be presented prizes at the function. A dance programme by artistes of the Cochin Kalabhavan would follow.
