The Kannur Corporation is planning to replicate at its landfill at Chelora here the hi-tech waste-to-energy plant at Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh.
The plant is proposed to be set up at Chelora under the State government’s initiative to set up waste-to-energy plants in seven districts. Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation Ltd. (KSIDC) is the nodal agency for establishing the waste-to-energy plants. As part of the plan, a 15-member delegation led by Mayor E.P. Latha recently visited the plant at Jabalpur.
“The plant at Jabalpur is a good model for waste treatment for Kannur,” Ms. Latha told The Hindu . The waste is being burnt at a large burner in the plant, she said, adding that as the gas generated thus was emitted only after treatment, it did not produce any foul smell or cause environmental pollution.
The KSIDC said that the Jabalpur Corporation, which had a population of 15 lakh, had generated 12.5 crore units of electricity from the plant, which had a capacity of 15 MW. The KSIDC had held a meeting of stakeholders here in December and assured them that the plant premises would be turned into a model spot for educating the public about scientific waste management. The KSIDC officials said adherence by the implementing agency to the Pollution Control Board norms would be ensured.
‘No adverse impacts’
The leachate and effluent gas coming out of the plant would be properly treated by the agency and would not have any kind of impact on the residents and surrounding waterbodies, they said.
The delegation that had visited Jabalpur included Deputy Mayor P.K. Ragesh, Corporation secretary P. Radhakrishnan, and standing committee chairpersons Vellora Rajan, T.O. Mohanan, P. Indira, C. Zeenath, C.K. Vinor, Shahina Moideen, C. Sameer, N. Balakrishnan, and Sajith K.
The delegation was received by Jabalpur Corporation Mayor Swati Sadanand Godbole.
