Organs of brain-dead person harvested

In yet another instance of cadaver transplantation in the district, organs of a brain-dead person were harvested to benefit five others.

The family of Babuji (55), who was admitted to Caritas Hospital near Kottayam, consented for organ transplantation after the doctors informed them of his condition.

Babuji, who belongs to Erumeli was working as a daily wage worker for the KSEB under a contractor, and was hit by a vehicle last week.

He was taken to a private hospital at Kanjirappally but was later transferred to Caritas hospital here.

On the way, the vehicle transporting Babuji was again caught in an accident and he was brought in a serious condition, hospital authorities said.

He was pronounced brain dead after undergoing the procedures.

The harvesting procedures commenced by 1 p.m. on Sunday after the relatives were duly informed of the condition of Babuji.

They were completed by 4.45 p.m., the hospital authorities said. Babuji’s liver, kidneys and cornea have been taken to various hospitals in Ernakulam and Kottayam Government Medical College Hospital and will benefit five people.
