The Congress party alone can arrest the growth of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the country, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has said.
Addressing a ‘Meet the leader’ programme of the Wayanad Press Club here on Monday, Mr. Chandy said that though the Communist Party of India (Marxist) started to fight against the growth of BJP in the State, they had paved the way for BJP in the country.
He came down heavily on the allegation made by LDF leaders that the Congress had made a secret agreement with BJP in the local body elections, Mr. Chandy said that now the CPI(M) was playing Machiavellianism to win the poll.
“What was the stance of the CPI(M) in 1977 general elections?” he asked and added that the CPI(M) was in the forefront to constitute a new political front to fight against the Congress party with the support of Bhartiya Janasangh, on behalf of National emergency.
The BJP and CPI (M) had jointly supported to elect V.P. Singh as the Prime Minister and later they worked together to dethrone the UPA ministry, Mr. Chandy said.
The Congress party alone could protect the secularism and communal harmony in the country, the Chief Minister said.
The major allegation of the LDF was the UDF ministry had protected the interest of a few minority group in allocating colleges under the UDF reign was baseless as the government had allotted as many as 26 new arts and science colleges in the state in past four years, in which 23 colleges were allotted to public sector and three to tribal organisations, Mr. Chandy said.
The SNDP-BJP combine was not a threat for the UDF in the poll, Mr. Chandy said adding the public would not support any front who were trying to destroy secularism and communal polarisation in the State.
