A 34-year-old person was killed in an accident at the Petro FCC Unit in Bharat Petroleum Corporation’s Kochi Refinery here on Sunday.

The deceased was identified as V. Rajesh, a native of TV Puram, Vaikom. The accident took place in the early hours of the day when the cover of a heat exchanger fell on him while it was being opened for maintenance.

Anil Kumar, another worker who was present at the spot, fractured one of his legs in the accident and is being treated at a city hospital.

Both Rajesh and Anil Kumar were working for Brothers Engineering, a private company on contract engaged in a routine maintenance work.

“They were engaged in routine maintenance work under which around 100 such equipments were serviced at various units so far this year,” said an official.

Kochi Refinery’s Safety department is investigating the incident.
