One killed, 4 injured in road accident

A 23-year-old pedestrian was killed and four others were injured when a KSRTC city bus lost control and ran into the footpath adjacent to the RMS building on the busy overbridge-Thampanoor stretch on Thursday.

The deceased had been identified as Renju, 23, Kadakkalil veedu, Ajayapuram, Panayamuttom, Medical College hospital sources said. The injured are Pramesh (19) of Nelimood, Balan, Rajan (28) of Medical College and Abijit (18) of Vellayani. Of the injured, Balan had been admitted to a private hospital and other to medical college hospital. The condition of Abijit was stated to be serious.

The incident took place when the bus was proceeding from East Fort to Thampanoor side. The bus rammed into the footpath on the opposite side knocking down the pedestrians and came to a halt after colliding against the boundary wall of the temple.

The police and the fire and rescue service personnel rushed to the spot and disconnected the power supply as an electric post of the KSEB got damaged in the incident to engage in the rescue work. The injured were rushed to the hospitals. Renju, who was trapped underneath the bus was taken out by a team led by the Assistant Divisional Officer, Reni Lukose.

Eye-witness said the bus was in high speed. Fire and Rescue Service personnel and the police said the failure of the brake might have led to the accident. Minister for Transport, V.S. Sivakumar were among those who visited the spot. The police have registered a case. Traffic along the stretch was affected following the incident.
