New lottery to fund flood relief

Govt expects to mop up ₹90 crore

The State government will launch a special lottery, Nava Kerala, to mobilise funds for flood relief operations in the State, Finance Minister T.M. Thomas Isaac has said.

He was talking to reporters here on Friday.

“The Nava Kerala lottery tickets will go on sale from September 3. The draw of lots will be held on October 3.’’ The price of a lottery ticket is ₹250. We expect to collect ₹90 crore from ticket sales.

“The money received will be utilised to provide relief to the flood-affected people,” Dr. Isaac said.

There will be 90 first prizes of ₹1 lakh and 1 lakh prizes of ₹5,000.

Dr. Isaac and Minister for Public Works G. Sudhakaran said a mass cleanliness drive would be conducted in Kuttanad as part of rehabilitating the flood-hit people.

“The drive will be held on August 28, 29 and 30. Around 55,000 people, including 5,000 from outside the district, will participate in the cleanliness drive. Snake-catchers will be brought from Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. Our aim is to rehabilitate as many people as possible by August 31,” the Ministers said.

They said boat services in Kuttanad would commence after August 30.
