Police resort to lathicharge to disperse violent protesters

Activists of the Muslim Youth League (MYL) and Muslim Students Federation (MSF) protested against Minister for Higher Education K.T. Jaleel by throwing eggs at his vehicle, waving black flags, and trying to stop him at several places at Tirur on Friday, leading to lathicharge of the activists by the police.

A few people, including three policemen, were injured in the violence.

History conference

The police arrested four MSF activists who protested against the Minister while he rose to inaugurate an international history conference at the Thunchath Ezhuthachan Malayalam University auditorium.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Jaleel warned that the country was witnessing attempts to restructure history on the basis of the Hindutva agenda. He asked the people to maintain vigil against such attempts.

He said history should be written with extreme care and accuracy.

Twisting history

According to him, some forces were twisting history in the name of hatred towards the minorities.

Delivering the introductory remarks, historian M.G.S. Narayanan underscored the need for scripting history at local level.

Malayalam University Vice Chancellor Anil Vallathol presided over the function.

Harbans Mukhia, former professor, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, delivered the keynote address.

V. Abdurahiman, MLA, Registrar T. Anita Kumari, Kerala History Conference secretary Gopalan Kutty, and Examination Controller E. Radhakrishnan spoke.

Dr. Mukhia released a documentary titled Tirur’s Local History made by the students of Malayalam University.

Historian M.R. Raghava Varier spoke.
