Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has welcomed Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's intervention in the Mullaperiyar issue.

Mr. Chandy was addressing a mass contact programme at the Corporation Stadium here on Thursday.

“A solution to the issue should ensure safety for the people of Kerala and water for Tamil Nadu. Kerala has made it clear that it is ready to give any kind of assurance to provide water to Tamil Nadu,” he added.

Pointing out that a good number of applications received as part of the CM's mass contact programme was related to APL/BPL cards, he said, “The BPL cards will be issued according to guidelines. Officials have been directed to process the applications.”

He handed over medical assistance to seven patients who were brought to the venue in ambulances.
