The nationwide strike on Thursday by motor transport workers against the Road Transport and Safety Bill 2014 hit normal life in the district as public transport vehicles, including buses, autorickshaws, and taxis kept off the road.
The strike, called by the All India Road Transport Workers’ Federation, was total in the district. 'The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) could not operate its services because of the support of the KSRT Employees’ Association for the strike. Strike supporters also stopped trucks coming from other States.
Shops closed
Most of the shops here remained closed and attendance in government offices was thin. Staff Reporter writes from Kasaragod: The strike derailed normal life in the district. All modes of public transport, including the KSRTC, kept off the road crippling public mobility. However, two-wheelers and private vehicles were found freely moving around.
Most shops in Kasaragod and Kanhangad and other towns remained closed.
Police vehicles, which operated special services, helped stranded passengers.
Pallikkare and Uduma panchayats were exempted from the strike in view of the Nelliyadukkam Vanattukulavan Theyyam festivial. The workers took out protest marches and held public meetings.
