The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) chose M.K. Muneer as its legislature party leader in the Assembly.

Dr. Muneer was selected at a meeting of party MLAs and MPs held at State president Syed Hyderali Shihab Thangal’s house at Panakkad, near here, on Saturday.

Dr. Muneer’s selection came in the wake of party general secretary P.K. Kunhalikutty’s election to the Lok Sabha in a byelection from Malappuram held on April 12.

Mr. Kunhalikutty is yet to resign his Assembly membership. He told mediapersons at Panakkad that he would tender his resignation after April 27.

The party leadership chose Dr. Muneer as its leader in the Assembly after hearing all MLAs separately. V.K. Ebrahim Kunju was elected Deputy Leader in the Assembly. T.A. Ahamed Kabeer was chosen secretary and M. Ummer party whip. K.M. Shaji was chosen treasurer.

Briefing newspersons after the meeting, Mr. Thangal said Mr. Muneer would also be the deputy leader of the Opposition in the Assembly.

Panel meet on May 13

Mr. Thangal said the meeting discussed neither the Lok Sabha byelection result nor the impending Assembly byelection at Vengara. The election result will be reviewed at a State working committee meeting on May 13. Mr. Thangal presided over the meeting.
