Revenue Secretary to seek reports

: The government has taken a serious view of alleged land-grabbing in Kaviyur grama panchayat and would take stern measures to recover the government land from illegal occupation, said Minister for Revenue Adoor Prakash on Monday.

The Minister was referring to a news report published in The Hindu on Monday titled ‘Norms flouted as high-rise comes up on Manimala bank.’

The Minister said he had directed the Revenue Secretary to seek detailed reports on the issue from the Survey Director and the District Collector. A high-level inquiry would be conducted into the issue on the basis of the reports.

Ironically, the Survey Director is yet to respond to the report submitted by the Deputy Director of Survey on May 8, recommending a comprehensive probe into the issue.

Against encroachment

Mr. Prakash said the government was committed to protecting the poromboke land and any encroachment.

Separate inquiries conducted by the Deputy Director of Survey, tahsildar, and the Survey Superintendent have revealed loss of 1.0344 hectares of government land at Manackachira in Kaviyur village alone.

A construction company has even built a 14-storey apartment allegedly in the river poromboke.

M.P. Dineshkumar, BJP panchayat member, alleged that the high-rise building had been constructed with the connivance of the grama panchayat authorities. He alleged that the panchayat chief was keen on recovering government land from a few individuals, while sparing the big guns.

Panchayat president T.K. Sajeev told The Hindu that the panchayat, in a resolution on May 14, 2014, had requested the District Collector to take necessary steps to cancel as many as 15 Thandapperus, under Survey No. 666/5 (river poromboke), which have been unauthorisedly included in the revenue register.
