The Medical Council of India (MCI) has given final approval/recognition for the 100 MBBS seats of Government Medical College, Manjeri.

The first batch of MBBS students has just come out of the college. The final approval to conduct MBBS course is a result of the consistent efforts by the government to improve infrastructure and facilities in the college and to make up deficiencies as reported by the MCI during its inspections from time to time, a statement issued by Health Minister K.K. Shylaja on Saturday said.

Now that the medical college has won permanent recognition for its MBBS course, MCI inspections will be held only once in five years and not every year.

The General Hospital, Manjeri, had been converted into a medical college by the United Democratic Front government in 2013, as part of its policy to open government medical colleges in every district. However, the fate of the 100 MBBS seats used to hang in the balance every year as the government struggled to fulfil the mandatory requirements stipulated by the MCI.

Seven acres

Ms. Shylaja said the government was now in the process of acquiring seven acres of land for the future development of the Government Medical College.
